More than 100 police agree to move south

More than 100 officers have responded to new police chief Seripisut Temiyavej's call for 1,000 volunteers to transfer to the troubled deep South.

Two of the volunteers are deputy commanders in the Metropolitan Police Traffic Division.

Bangkok colonels Kareerin Inkaew and Chote Chawalwiwat will be assigned to royal security when Their Majesties the King and Queen visit the region.

Both said yesterday they wanted to so as a tribute to His Majesty the King on the occassion of his his 80th birthday, which fall son December 5.

Chote has six years' service remaining and has volunteered for a positing in Yala. Kareerin is a native of Surat Thani. He volunteered for a transfer to Pattani.

Kareerin believed familiarity with southerners would make his job easier. He will concentrate on crime suppression and civil affairs. Chote was committed to royal security. It is his first posting to an area of armed conflict.

On Monday Seripisut called for 1,000 officers to volunteer for the assignment within seven days.
