Boonsak gets better of his rival

[BADMINTON] Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana booked a quarter-final berth after his first victory over old foe Muhd Hafiz B Hashim of Malaysia in the men's singles at the US$200,000 Singapore Open in Singapore yesterday.

The world No 11 took just 33 minutes to thrash his Malaysian opponent 21-14 21-13 in the second round, marking victory for the first time in five encounters.

The Thai next takes on Chinese world No 1 Lin Dan, whom he has never beaten before.

The Thai team also received a timely boost when Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam cruised through the quarter-finals by beating South Koreans

Lee Jae-jin and Lee Hyo-jung 21-19 15-21 21-18 in the mixed doubles.

However, the story was different for their fellow Thais Songpon Anukrittayawan and Duang-anong Aroonkesorn, who had no answer to the guile of Chinese world No 2 Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen and lost 21-8 21-13.
