'Spider-Man' sets records right across continent

"Spider-Man 3" set a box-office opening record on Tuesday in all eight Asian countries where it is being screened, including Thailand, according to Sony Pictures.
In Thailand, the film collected Bt34 million for the biggest opening day ever, surpassing the Thai action flick "Tom-Yum-Goong", whose ticket revenue record was Bt30.6 million. The Hollywood record in Thailand was "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", at Bt26.3 million. The new record in the Kingdom is also an all-time high for a weekday. "Spider-Man 3" has earned Bt69 million for two days of screening at 331 venues, said a spokesperson for Sony Pictures in Thailand. Suvit Thongrompo, managing director of SF Cinema City, said "Spider-Man 3" would be one of the blockbusters boosting the local cinema industry this year. While "Spider-Man 3" is expected to raise about Bt180 million in ticket sales, he said all the upcoming blockbusters would lead to a 30-per-cent increase in overall ticket sales from Bt3.4 billion last year. "It's the golden year in a 10-year period," he said in a recent interview. Opening on Tuesday in eight Asian countries, "Spider-Man broke the opening-day records in every single one: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines. In Taiwan (Taipei only), the ticket revenue for the biggest weekday opening ever was recorded at US$515,000 (Bt17.9 million), exceeding the previous record of "Kung Fu Hustle" by director/actor Stephen Chow. In the Philippines, where the latest instalment of the Spider-man series opened at 150 theatres across the country, tickets were sold out. In Korea, the movie also beat out the one-day marks of its predecessors, taking in 3.2 billion won (Bt119 million), according to its local Sony distributor. In Hong Kong, the superhero flick saw the biggest opening day of all time, with HK$7.5 million (Bt33 million), beating previous record holder "Kung Fu Hustle". The movie premiered on Tuesday in 16 other key countries, including France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Egypt. Outside Asia, the latest Spider-Man instalment set opening-day records in four nations: France, Italy, Belgium and Egypt. In France, Italy and Belgium, it has become the biggest grossing film ever for either Hollywood or local films. It broke the opening-day gross record of "Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire" ($3.9 million) in France, and out-grossed "The Da Vinci Code" in Italy with $2.95 million. Its gross in Belgium was $5.52 million. In Egypt, it earned $0.29 million and topped the opening-day record set by "Pirates of the Caribbean 2".
