Sonthi to press Cabinet

Council for National Security chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin plans today to ask the Cabinet to launch a public relations campaign designed to counter the surge in anti-coup sentiment abroad, his spokesman said yesterday.
"General Sonthi is concerned about Thai expats and foreigners being misinformed about the situation in Thailand, which if allowed to go on, might trigger even greater confusion," Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnoed said.He said Sonthi would leave it up to the government to decide how to tailor the campaign. In regards to speculation that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra was considering returning to Bangkok next month, he said the CNS expected him to live up to his previous agreement. "In his earlier talks with many CNS members, Thaksin agreed to work out with the CNS his planned activities and future role before his eventual return," he said. He confirmed that Thaksin had promised to inform the CNS in advance about his arrangements before ending his exile abroad, dismissing concern about an abrupt return. He said the CNS would not object if Thaksin were obliged to return to fight his court battle in the capital, adding that the litigation had not however yet reached the trial stage.
