Best to fix charter draft: PM

It was better to revise the first draft of the new constitution so that it's acceptable to the majority of voters, than waiting for the Council for National Security to pick a previous charter to be promulgated, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday.

"Don't look at the narrower way out. We have to help find the broader way out that is widely acceptable," Surayud said.

Under the interim constitution, the CNS is empowered to pick any previous charter to put into use if the final draft of the new charter is rejected in a referendum.

The PM made his remarks during a meeting with media representatives at Government House.

He also said the Cabinet would discuss at its weekly meeting today a proposal by respected senior citizen Prawase Wasi that the government hold a conference to sound out viewpoints from political parties about the first charter draft.

The Cabinet is one of the 12 state organisations empowered by the interim constitution to provide feedback and items for possible review in the first draft.
