Rally in Chiang Mai to focus on child labour

Local and migrant workers, employers, business associations, youth groups, government departments and migrant labourers will throng Chiang Mai streets today in a rally against child labour.
The National Labour Day march highlights the problem of child labour and efforts to eliminate its worst forms. The march sets the scene for the signing of an Action Programme for Prevention and Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Chiang Mai on Thursday. About 1,000 people - including members of 100 companies and youth councils - are expected to march. It sets out from the municipal park at 8.30am and heads to Ban San Kong School where events will be held. Sports and other games are organised throughout the day and local and migrant-worker teams will compete. Labour officials will be available for consultations on labour rights, social security and workplace safety and health. Information about International Labour Organisation conventions will be available, too. Thailand ratified the organisation's Minimum Age Convention in 2004 and Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention in 2001. The government is working to meet its obligations under these conventions - including enforcing the national-action programme combating the worst forms of child labour. It focuses on wiping out child slavery, labour, prostitution and pornography.
