Estates open to public scrutiny

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) will open factories on its industrial estates to community inspections, in order to secure greater public confidence, citing strict compliance with international environmental standards and preparedness to host inspection results on the Internet for public scrutiny.
Peravatana Rungraungsri, director of the IEAT's Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate office, said his agency would implement plans to enable factory inspections on that estate, which contains 101 industrial facilities, including power and petrochemical plants. Between now and May 30 the IEAT will invite 30 community representatives to participate in joint inspections of the plants. For purposes of higher inspection standards, the agency will also increase the frequency of its visits from one at present to four times a year, and monitoring reports will be announced on its website for public scrutiny.
