Decision on prosecution deferred
The Attorney-General Office's Department of Economic Crime Litigation yesterday postponed its decision to May 30 on whether to prosecute businessman Paijit Thammarojpinit, also known as Por Pratunam, and eight others. Public prosecutor Paiboon Ananchavanich said the office needed more investigation, witness interviews and evidence. If the case goes to court, Por and the other suspects - including his wife and daughter - would face charges of operating a gambling den, possessing stolen items, charging above-legal-limit interest rates, bringing goods into the country without paying taxes and having more than the legal limit of playing-card decks. The case stemmed from a pre-dawn raid by police on a gambling den in Bangkok's Ratchathewi district in February last year that rounded up 262 gamblers and seized betting items and money totalling Bt152 million. CABINET EXPANSION Three names submitted for approval The names of several new Cabinet members have been submitted to the Palace for Royal endorsement, government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp said yesterday, but declined to reveal further details. A source said the three new appointees would serve as deputy ministers for Public Health, Agriculture, and the Interior.
