COURT APPEAL
Supreme Court stays jail term

The Supreme Court yesterday endorsed a 30-year jail term given by a lower court to a junior Army officer for his part in the armed robbery of 30 pistols from a Don Muang airport warehouse six years ago.
Dismissing an appeal by Sgt Major Thaweelarp Saensuk to shorten his prison term, the judges said the defendant's acts on the night of April 12, 2001, were serious and there was no cause for leniency. The Criminal Court sentenced Thaweelarp on September 25, 2003, following accounts by prosecution witnesses, including a security guard on duty at the warehouse - who was badly beaten by Thaweelarp. Several other assailants who took part in the robbery are still on the run. Meanwhile, a Court of Appeal verdict acquitted Flight Lieutenant Warakorn Phoolprasert, who was alleged to have planned the robbery and was found in possession of the stolen pistols after the crime.
