Appeal court shows some heart

A man convicted of contempt of court after a melee outside the Election Commission last year yesterday won an appeal to have his three-month jail term suspended for one year after showing remorse.

The Court of Appeal granted leniency on the condition that Sathien Wiphromha refrain from any more unruly conduct. Sathien would still have to pay a Bt500 fine as punishment.

Last July, Sathien and 10 others rallied inside a court building to oppose a judicial decision to penalise three Election Commissioners, under the leadership of Vasana Puemlarp, for mismanaging the botched April vote.

The lower court handed down guilty verdicts for contempt the following month. Sathien was given 3 months jail.

Four others received one-month jail terms and a fine of Bt500.

The remaining five, including Chat Thai politician and former massage parlour kingpin Chuwit Kamolvisit, had their sentences suspended for one year.

Meanwhile, Somyos Duangpatra and others convicted, failed to show up for their appeal rulings. - The Nation
