AIS seeks 2.7m new subscribers

Advanced Info Service (AIS) is confident it will meet its target for new subscribers this year, despite the slowing economy.
AIS vice president Titipong Khiewpaisal yesterday said people were still signing up for cellular services, due to very low air-time rates and cheap mobile phones. By adding a net 2.7 million subscribers to its existing base of more than 20 million, AIS hopes to dominate half of the country's mobile-phone-user market. Its share peaked at 65 per cent in 2002-03. Total Access Communication and True Move follow, with 12 million plus and 7 million subscribers, respectively. Yesterday, AIS introduced a promotional call package for its post-paid service, offering four options for monthly payment. Each option gives twice the call value for calls within the AIS network. For example, by signing up for the Bt300 monthly payment, post-paid subscribers can make up to Bt600 worth of calls within the network. The rates for calls to other networks range from Bt1.25 to Bt2.50 per minute.
