South Korea's LG Electronics is targeting more than double growth for its handset sales in Thailand this year, with the highlight being its new flagship mobile phone, the LG Shine.
LG Electronics (Thailand) sales and marketing manager Manop Maneechawakajone yesterday said LG expected to sell 500,000 handsets this year out of an estimated total of 8 million handset sales in the Thai market. Last year, LG sold about 200,000 handsets worth Bt700 million, of which 80,000 units were its flagship Chocolate models. The company will introduce more than 20 new mobile-phone models to Thailand this year, the highlight being its premium slide-phone LG Shine model, which will be on the shelves later this week. The full-metal-body LG Shine is aimed at cashing in on the success of its predecessor Chocolate, Manop said. "We target LG Shine sales of 100,000 units and between 40,000 to 50,000 of the Chocolate model this year," he added. LG Electronics (Thailand) managing director Sung Nak-kil said Thailand would be the first Southeast Asian country offering the LG Shine model. LG has set aside a Bt200-million marketing budget this year for mobile phones, half of it for the LG Shine model alone. LG, a newcomer in the global market, will also launch two new colour-screen mobile phones next month priced at less than Bt2,000 each, to tap the low-end market.
