In brief :CP firm moves into soybeans

Chia Tai (Tianjin), the Charoen Pokphand Group's business arm in China, recently formed a joint venture with international agribusiness company Bunge to establish a soybean processing plant in Tianjin.

Bunge will hold a majority interest and manage the plant, its third in China. Located near a modern port, the plant will supply the fast-growing livestock and feed industries and the large consumer market in the greater Beijing area.

China's consumption of soybean meal and soybean oil has risen at annual rates of more than 11 per cent and 13 per cent since 1999.

The Agriculture Ministry has allocated a Bt19.95-million budget to support its pilot project on a "traceability system" for white- and black-tiger shrimp, baby corn and chicken, to ensure export quality and food safety.

Participant companies are shrimp exporters Pakfoods and Chanthaburi Frozen Foods; chicken processors Bangkok Produce, B Food Products International, Ajinomoto Betagro, Saha Farms, Sun Valley (Thailand) and Sun Foods International; and a baby-corn exporter.
