No extension for Sonthi

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday ruled out the possibility of extending the Army chief's term, saying it would be against the law.

"My government won't do anything which is against the law. The extension is against the law," he told TV 7.

Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, who is also the chairman of the Council for National Security, will retire in October. There was speculation earlier that the government might extend Sonthi's term until after the next election to keep him in charge of security as the head of the junta.
