Universiade committee chief promises a spectacular games

In an attempt to make the 24th Bangkok Universiade a world-class event, the games' Public Relations Committee has outlined promotion plans, although the games are still three months away.
During a brainstorming session with local media at Sripatum University, Dr Rutchaneeporn P Phukkamarn, the committee chairman, on Friday said promotional activities would be conducted to let Thai people from all walks of life be part of the biennial sports extravaganza. "A good start to our public relations means the job's half done. Billboards, television, radio and movie spots will soon be on display, while posters, leaflets and banners will also be available," she said. "Road shows in all four regions will kick off in June. The committee also has joined hands with ESPN to provide comprehensive coverage on its network in more than 30 countries worldwide," added Rutchaneeporn, the varsity rector. She said that some qualified students have already been chosen as "Universiade ambassadors" to promote the games, while prominent sports celebrities Danai Udomchoke (tennis), Boonsak Ponsana (badminton), Yaowapa Boorapolchai (taekwondo) and Teerathep Winothai (soccer) will be presenters of the games. "We promise the opening and closing ceremonies at the Rajamangala National Stadium will be grand and spectacular. It will be very convenient for the public, as all the competing venues are located within Bangkok and its vicinity. So far, 122 countries have submitted their entries. "Thailand and the Fisu [International University Sports Federation] will provide financial support to athletes from more than 20 very poor countries. I hope that over 10,000 athletes from more than 150 countries will take part in the games," she added. A press welcoming party will be held for 600 journalists from around the world prior to the games. The main press centre will be located at Thammasat University's Rangsit Campus. Four press sub-centres will be set up in Srinakharinwirot Ongkharak, Rajamangala Stadium, Muang Thong Thani and Rama Gardens Hotel. "I urge each and every Thai to join hands with us to make the 24th edition a memorable one and bring fame and reputation to the Kingdom," said Rutchaneeporn. The Bangkok Universiade will take place from August 8 to 18. The hosts are expected to win about 10 gold medals in the 11-day event. At the previous edition in Izmir, Turkey two years ago, the Thai delegation returned with three medals, all from taekwondo.
