Malaria 'from Thai workers'

Infected Thai workers were the cause of a malaria outbreak in Lawin, Gerik, Perak state's top official Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said yesterday.

He said investigations by the health department revealed that the locals had contracted the disease because of infected Thai rubber-tappers working in the area.

Tajol Rosli said villagers were also screened to ensure that the outbreak did not worsen.

"The department has sent medical teams to Lawin to treat the patients. Screening of the foreign workers and villagers will continue," he told reporters yesterday. .

So far, 61 people in the area have tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease.
