Fire shuts MBK mall

A blaze yesterday afternoon forced the crowded MBK Centre in Bangkok to close down for one day, but no casualties were reported, police said.

The fire apparently broke out in the Daidomon restaurant on the seventh floor of the city-centre mall, popular among middle-market shoppers, locals and tourists alike.

About 5,000 visitors were evacuated, and workers in the 2,000 tenant shops were instructed to go home pending the police investigation.
