Nationwide bid for 'peaceful politics'

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry will next month launch more than 900 venues for "community-level democracy for peaceful politics" to help generate a peaceful and violence-free society.

Deputy Prime Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham said the country continued to struggle with poverty, debt and differences in thinking in spite of state mechanisms to solve these problems.

The ministry believes the venues in all districts will create a culture of "civic dialogue" and promote community democracy.

The stages will see moderators bring people with different political thoughts to talk and listen to one another on a regular basis, Paiboon said.

They can search for "people agendas", empower people and create a peaceful and violence-free society at the community level.

Social critic Prawase Wasi said that community democracy was a base for "peaceful and virtuous politics".

He said the move would decide many issues stemming from the complications of modern society that remained unsolved because people were more occupied with attacking one other.
