Four killed, two injured in Narathiwat shootings

Four people have died in separate shootings in four districts of this southern province since Thursday night, police said yesterday. Two people were wounded in the attacks.
Arong Mahama, a 52-year-old assistant village head, was shot dead in Rusoh late Thursday night while riding a motorbike to guard a school. Mahamad Amin Cerikhan, 45, chairman of the Rusoh Village Head Club, was wounded in the attack. Around the same time in Rangae, villager Chinarong Sanoh died in a gun attack while his motorbike passenger Yaki Hajading was wounded. In Joh I Rong, Amdee Jehaesae was shot dead while standing in the front of his neighbour's home on Thursday night. In Muang district, Awae Daoh, 51, was shot dead in front of his house. Police believe militants attacked these people to maintain the level of violence in the restive region, which erupted at the beginning of 2004 and has taken more than 2,000 lives. In neighbouring Pattani, a wooden building in Parane district's Ban Parumawor School was burned to the ground after an arson attack in the early hours of yesterday. Firemen spent more than an hour extinguishing the blaze, but the two-storey structure was gutted.
