Abuse of power alleged in rights commission

The infighting among the 11-member National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) reached boiling point yesterday when one member petitioned to impeach eight others, including chairman Saneh Chamarik.

The petition was submitted to the National Legislative Assembly Speaker's Office by Suthin Nophaket.

It listed five cases of "power abuse" as grounds for impeachment.

"I want to set the standard for ethics and morality as the NHCR is mired by favouritism, a lack of transparency and abuse of power," Suthin said.

Among the five alleged violations, he cited a court ruling against Saneh for abusing his power in assisting his cronies to become civil servants by upgrading them from employee status.

In another case, the Supreme Administrative Court had ruled against Saneh for issuing an unfair order to his top adviser, Chuchai Supawong, to follow unreasonable office regulations, he said.

NHCR officials have launched 23 administrative litigation cases accusing Saneh of bullying subordinates, he said.

Saneh's NHCR accomplices Charan Ditapichai, Khunying Amphorn Meesuk, Arporn Wongsang, Surasee Kosolnavin, Sunee Chaiyaros, Vasant Panich and Naiyana Supapong should also be removed from office, he said. - The Nation.
