Climate change plan drafted

A national plan to fight climate change would increase by half the country's forested area and build more urban green zones.

The National Environmental Board (NEB) draft recommended reducing greenhouse gases, public participation in environmental issues and better enforcement of environmental legislation, office director Prasertsuk Chamornmarn said.

She said the recommendations would not hobble economic development. The draft needs the support of Natural Resources and Environment Minister Kasem Sanidwong na Ayudhaya. He will receive the document early next month. It must then win approval of the NEB and the Cabinet.

"We plan to increase forested area by 50 per cent by 2016 and add more green areas to urban zones," Prasertsuk said yesterday. It aims to create almost 11,000 forest villages based on an initiative devised by His Majesty the King. - The Nation
