AOT to choose new contractor

Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen yesterday said he had empowered Airports of Thailand (AOT) to make the decision on who will be the next operator of duty free shops and manager of commercial areas at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Theera said that he received a report from AOT on its boards' resolution to terminate two contracts made with its partner King Power International to operate duty free shops and manage commercial areas. The resolution followed the Council of State's ruling that King Power's contract be nullified for the intention to violate the Private-Public Joint Venture Act.

"Whether to renew the contracts with King Power or open bidding to find a new duty free company should await AOT's consideration," said Theera.

Meanwhile, after meeting with participating state enterprises including the State Railway of Thailand, the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA), Theera said the three electric-rail route projects are ongoing.

He said the three routes - Red Line's Bang Sue-Taling Cha and Bang Sue-Rangsit sections and the Purple Line's Bang Yai-Bang Sue section, expected to open bidding first - are now under the procurement process. Theera said that loans to finance the projects would depend on the ministry's time frame and the country's total debt.

As to the matter of MRTA board's resolution to hire the AEC Group and the BMTA as consultants for the Red and Blue lines, respectively, he said the board would be responsible for any problems and to answer questions about transparency.
