Showdown on TV show

Confrontation between former and current power cliques is intensifying, and not only at political rallies.

During the television programme "Constitution meets the people" moderated by Constitution Drafting Assembly member Chirmsak Pinthong, charter writer Dr Chuchai Supawong attacked Thai Rak Thai Party leaders.

He accused Somkid Jatusripitak, Chaturon Chaisang and Pongthep Thepkanchana for refusing to step down during the Thaksin Shinawatra government. Both were guests on the programme.

"We cannot blame the 1997 Constitution for last year's political crisis. Blame the electioneers who abused their power. It is the country's bad luck that the most crooked electioneers ruled the country,'' Chuchai said.

Pongthep tried to defend himself as supporters cheered him. Others jeered and booed. Tensions remained high until Pongthep's supporters left the studio.
