IN BRIEF
BOXING:Filipino succumbs after being knocked out in bout on Friday

A Filipino boxer has died in hospital after being knocked out during his Friday bout with a local fighter.

Angelito Signorio, 24, died of brain injuries after being operated on at Piyamin Hospital on Saturday.

Signorio was knocked out in the fourth round of his fight with former World Boxing Council champion Chatchai Krathingdaeng Gym. Chatchai has fought as Chatchai Dutchboy Gym and Chatchai Singwancha.

The council-sanctioned super-flyweight bout was fought at a temporary ring at Wat Sing School in Chom Thong district on Friday.

The Filipino later went into shock at his hotel and was admitted to hospital where he was unconscious in intensive care.

Chatchai, 37, expressed sorrow for Signorio's death.

BIRD FLU:High-risk areas being disinfected

The Agriculture Ministry will today begin disinfecting all areas where the risk of a recurrence of bird flu is high.

High-risk areas are those where previous outbreaks have occurred as well as those frequented by migratory birds, Agriculture Minister Thira Sutabutra said.

Provincial livestock authorities have been notified about the ministry's latest precautionary measure against an epidemic, Thira said. The disinfecting campaign will be completed by Sunday, he added.

Livestock Development Department director-general Chaveewan Liewvijak said surveillance had been beefed up at border areas following a recent outbreak in Mukdahan.

All vehicles coming to and from Laos via both Friendship bridges will be sprayed with disinfectant, and birds transported from areas within 10 kilometres of the Mukdahan outbreaks will be screened for signs of the virus.

These measures will remain in place for at least one month, Chaveewan said.
