BIRD FLU:High-risk areas being disinfected The Agriculture Ministry will today begin disinfecting all areas where the risk of a recurrence of bird flu is high. High-risk areas are those where previous outbreaks have occurred as well as those frequented by migratory birds, Agriculture Minister Thira Sutabutra said. Provincial livestock authorities have been notified about the ministry's latest precautionary measure against an epidemic, Thira said. The disinfecting campaign will be completed by Sunday, he added. Livestock Development Department director-general Chaveewan Liewvijak said surveillance had been beefed up at border areas following a recent outbreak in Mukdahan. All vehicles coming to and from Laos via both Friendship bridges will be sprayed with disinfectant, and birds transported from areas within 10 kilometres of the Mukdahan outbreaks will be screened for signs of the virus. These measures will remain in place for at least one month, Chaveewan said.
