Slimming pills 'led to girl's death'

A 16-year-old cheerleader at a famous girls' school has succumbed to acute kidney failure - an untimely death her parents blamed on her year-long dependence on weight-control pills. Siranya Ukawong, who was due to be in Grade 11, died on Monday night.

On Sunday, she was hospitalised with severe stomach pains and excessive vomiting. Hundreds of her relatives, teachers and friends from Suranaree Wittaya School attended her funeral yesterday.

"She was well loved by friends and teachers," school director Silapasit Taptimthongchai said yesterday.

He said Siranya was a bright student with a grade average of 3.5 points out of possible 4.0. She was cheerful, polite and a beautiful, slender girl.

Silapasit quoted Siranya's father as saying that the girl used weight-control pills to suppress her appetite and stay slim.
