Sophon stars for the Hi-Tech

[BASKETBALL] Sophon Pinitpacharalert fired 24 points to help defending champions Hi-Tech beat Sunspark 85-54 in the men's preliminary rounds of the King's Cup Basketball Championships yesterday.
Competing at Siam University's Gymnasium, Kamik Pongsiri, Nontaphop Wiwatanapongpet and Sophon scored six points apiece to help Hi-Tech grab a 34-22 lead in the first quarter. With 3:03 remaining in the second session, Sunspark came alive and closed the gap to 39-29, forcing Hi-Tech to call two time-outs in a span of one minute to break the momentum. Sunspark then tried fast breaks and firmed up their defence but failed to stop their rivals, who increased the gap to 20 points at the end of third period. Trailing 26 points with almost two seconds left, Sunspark tried desperately to add some respectability to their score but Hi-Tech's Boonchuay Popak stole the ball and hit the basket to the disappointment of their rivals. Chainarong Suntareeyapas, who was out of action for several months because of an injury, made a fine return, leading Tiew Pai Ngram A to a 90-50 win over Tiew Pai Ngarm B in the men's Group B match. In a women's Group A match, Nantana Chareonrat sank 17 points as Bangkok Bank A outclassed Chiang Mai University 100-51. Star-studded Rattanabundit trounced Ratjabat Chiang Mai University 87-22 in a women's Group B match.
