New lease for store on hold

The National Legislative Assembly's Transport Committee has instructed the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to delay renewing the ground lease for Central Lat Phrao shopping complex.

"We view that the contract should be extended in a way that ensures the maximum benefit to the state enterprise and that it should be subject to the Public-Private Joint Venture Act. This is to avoid repeating the case of King Power International," committee chairman Bannavit Kengrien said yesterday.

The Central Group's 30-year lease for the site expires late next year, and it is seeking 30 more years.

The SRT is still inefficient in managing its properties and has racked up losses of Bt36 billion as of 2005, Bannavit added.
