Aiyawatt is the hero

[POLO] Thailand, spearheaded by young Aiyawatt Raksriaksorn, captured the Gold Cup Polo Championship after edging out Brunei 5-4 in the final on Sunday at the Bangbor VR Sports Complex in Samut Prakan.
The home side, which included Aiyawatt's elder brother Apichet, Thanasilp Chuewan-gkham and Chanothai Songvanich, overwhelmed Singapore 10-3 in their opener on Saturday. It was like rubbing salt into the wounds of the Singaporeans, who lost to Thailand in the King's Cup recently. The second match in the quadrangular meet saw Brunei struggle to beat Malaysia 5.5-5. On Sunday, Malaysia proved too strong for Singapore 13-2.5 in the third-place play-off. The final, played over four chukkas, saw the hosts attack from the beginning to lead 2-0 in the first chukka. However Brunei, led by Pengiran Anak Hj Abd Rahim Kemaludin, the son-in-law of Sultan Hasanal Bolkiah, and Pengiran Anak Hj Mohd Basheer Kemaludin, came back strongly to tie the score at 4-4. Thailand continued their aggressive form into the fourth chukka and the experienced Aiyawatt, who underwent a month's training with world champion Adolfo Cambiaso in Argentina, drove the last nail into the visitors' coffin with a fine goal. Brunei took second place while Malaysia finished third in the two-day tournament, jointly organised by King Power and the Thailand Equestrian Polo Association.
