Prasong is 'not quitting'

Constitution Drafting Committee chairman Prasong Soonsiri has dismissed a rumour that he would quit, saying it was an attempt to discredit him and confuse the public about the current political situation.
"I and my panel will draft the best constitution ever within the due date [April 19] to make the election to be held by year-end," he said. "The only thing in my mind is how I will deliver that goal."The rumour about my resignation has no basis in fact. I never said it," he said. Newspapers had reported on Monday - claiming a source close to Prasong - that he would resign because he was disappointed with the failure of the junta and the government in handling the current problems. Prasong said the source intended to confuse the public by suggesting he had argued with the ruling leaders. "There was nothing like that," he said. He insisted he only wanted to tell the junta-backed government that the people were not impressed with the way they had run the country, which could be a major factor in why people would vote against the new charter in the national referendum, he added. Prasong has played a controversial role in recent weeks. He backed a bid to revive the non-elected prime minister, while asking his panel to ensure the military junta is given amnesty from prosecution in the charter now being drafted.
