Dust levels high in Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is still plagued by smoke haze with dust-particle levels at a dangerous 186 micrograms per cubic metre (mpcm), according to the Pollution Control Department.

The department warned Mae Hong Son residents to avoid all forms of outdoor burning and to promptly report forest fires.

Children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems are advised to refrain from outdoor activity.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Kasem Sanidwong na Ayudhaya said on the "direct line to Parliament" programme yesterday that there would be negotiations over the coming two months with neighbouring countries affected by smoke from Thailand.

Other northern provinces report fine-particle dust levels within limits. In Chiang Mai the reading was 85mpcm, Lampang reported 71mpcm and Chiang Rai 78mpcm.

Fine-dust particles are those smaller than 10 micrograms. The acceptable level is 120mpcm.
