EC to hear from Chaturon

The Election Commission has scheduled a meeting late next week to hear testimony from the Thai Rak Thai Party's acting leader Chaturon Chaisang - who is expected to deny he defied the coup leaders' ban on party gatherings.

"Chaturon will give his side of the story to help the EC gather factual information before deciding whether to file any charges," EC chairman Apichart Sukhagganond said yesterday. He said the EC was investigating Chaturon's recent trip to meet constituents in the Northeast in spite of a ban on political activities.

The EC had not made a conclusion, he said, explaining that if Chaturon was found to have violated the ban, the EC would have to decide if it had a mandate to rule on the matter, or forward it to the Constitution Tribunal. - The Nation
