MTO sets up N America office in US

The Mekong Tourism Office (MTO) has established an office in the United States with the appointment of John Semone as regional director for North America.

For the first time since the establishment of the MTO in Bangkok, the office will have a local contact point in North America for the travel industry and those interested in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS): Cambodia, Yunnan and Guangxi (China), Laos, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam.

Semone has more than 35 years' experience in the tourism industry, with management responsibilities at Air New Zealand in North America and the Pacific Asia Travel Association in both Europe and North America.

He will head the new MTO office in California and raise awareness of what is one of the world's most popular developing tourism destinations.

MTO Executive director Stephen Yong said the Mekong Tourism office in North America would significantly increase both arrival figures and development in the GMS countries. GMS destinations have a wealth of culture and heritage that will satisfy any tourist to the region, he said.
