Traffic jams as protesters demand action from govt

Groups of protesters paraded to Government House yesterday demanding the government take action over their grievances. The gatherings caused severe traffic jams.

Former Thai Rak Thai MP Surapong Towijakchaikul and 10 others submitted evidence and asked Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to fire PM's Office minister Thirapat Serirangsan and Public Relations Department chief Pramote Ratvinij for allowing ASTV and Sondhi Limthongkul to broadcast on Channel 11.

Then a group of 100 former employees of the Express Transportation Organisation of Thailand (ETOT) submitted a letter requesting talks with Surayud in seven days about ETOT issues and clarification on how the government would deal with them.

The group asked the government to revoke the 2005 Cabinet resolution that dissolved the organisation. The group also announced - in response to former ETOT president Prasong Tanamneewattana's claim that he had not abandoned the employees and had already paid them compensation in full - that they had not received any money for over a year now.

Another group of 300 red-shirted retailers from Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket and Angthong arrived at Government House to object to the development of Tesco-Lotus hypermarkets and to show their support for the government's amendment of the draft retail business act to prevent multinational stores "destroying the country".

Hundreds of members of the People's Network from Four Regions, who had camped in front of Government House for nine days, yesterday submitted a letter to the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary, saying they would move to Laos. They claimed the government had neglected them and could not write off their debts.
