Groups hand in demands

Several groups threatened yesterday to hold a rally and start a campaign to vote against the new constitution - if their suggestions were rejected.
Pressure groups submitted their proposals to Constitution Drafting Assembly chairman Noranit Setabutr at the Parliament. The first group, led by General Wasu Chanarat, is demanding that the constitution includes a declaration making Buddhism the official state religion. They have threatened to rally at Parliament House if it is omitted. A group of former elected senators led by Sing Buri's Kamnuan Chalopatham also submitted a proposal to Noranit calling on the charter writers to maintain senator elections and ensure the prime minister is chosen from MPs. They also want to see party-list MPs and single-MP constituency elections remain, Kamnuan said. Another ex-senator, Viboon Chamchuen, said they would campaign for people to vote against the draft charter if senators were appointed and not elected.
