NTC seeks advice on change of members

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will consult with the Council of State on whether it must change three of its members as required by law when it only has six left.
Commissioner Sethaporn Cusripituck said last week that the NTC was supposed to have seven members but Artorn Chandavimol had resigned last year. The frequency-allocation law stipulates that the NTC must hold a draw to pick three members out of seven to step down after the first three years of its operation, which would be September. The selection committee must have 17 members, five from the public sector, four from educational institutions, four from professional telecom associations and four from the consumer-protection field. While the government and educational sectors have already named their representatives, the telecom and consumer sectors have been unable to appoint theirs. Preparations to select three new commissioners after three seats are vacated in September have failed to progress for the same reason. But the NTC's future awaits the National Legislative Assembly's amendment of the telecom and frequency-allocation laws to allow the merger of the NTC and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
