Microchip firm wins tyre deal

Advanced ID, a supplier of radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchips, has been contracted by Eurotyre to install ID tags in selected truck tyres for a major trial of its tyre-management system.
Eurotyre managing director Pichit Lertudomtana said the company was convinced RFID microchips would eventually be installed in most truck tyres, because of the increasing requirement for efficient fleet management and tyre control. Improved tyre management will directly reduce the cost of operating truck fleets. Pichit said he also believed that because of the benefit to fleet owners, they would insist tyre manufacturers put RFID "tags" into their new tyres. Advanced ID president and CEO Dan Finch said the company had been installing tyre tags for more than a year and that retreaders around the world had shown great interest as the fleet management industry realised the need for an improvement over bar-codes for tyre identification. "Eurotyre is a pioneer in installing our tyre tags as part of its retread process, and we will work closely with the company to ensure its success," Finch said. "We are helping create the first integrated tyre-maintenance product line with UK-based Pneu-Logic and our other strategic partners. We are seeing the industry convert from small trials to predictions that fleet managers will have to move to an RFID-based tyre-management system. This will encourage tyre manufacturers to provide their products with built-in RFID tags."
