Most labour disputes settled

The Labour Protection and Welfare Department has settled nearly all labour disputes that mushroomed late last year, director-general Padungsak Thephasdin na Ayutthaya said yesterday.
From October to January, there were 19 disputes involving 9,373 workers and the department managed to solve 18 of them involving 8,933 employees, Padungsak said. Of 19 other labour-related conflicts involving 6,312 workers, it settled 17 involving 5,516 employees.Padungsak said the statistics were in contrast with some labour organisations' allegations that the ministry would be unable to settle disagreements in the workplace. Instructed by Labour Minister Apai Chandanachulaka to settle problems as soon as they happen, Padungsak said the department emphasised getting employers and workers to talk and work things out. Padungsak said there were 60 labour disputes involving 37,539 workers in 2006 (October 2005 to September 2006) - down from 99 disputes involving 38,486 workers in the previous year.
