Culture Minister calls on Chula to punish Pemmika

The culture minister yesterday urged Chulalongkorn University to take disciplinary action against fourth-year psychology student Pemmika Veerachatraksit over her alleged affair with another woman's husband.
Pemmika, 24, who claimed to be a long-time close friend to Dr Prakitpao Thomthitchong, was on Tuesday sued by Prakitpao's wife, Alisa, for Bt27 million for having an affair with her husband since mid-2006. Alisa accused the student of speaking publicly about her intimate relationship with Prakitpao, giving details that implied the pair were lovers. Culture Minister Khunying Kaisri Sri-aroon said Pemmika's behaviour was "improper" and as a student, being accused of having an adulterous affair should be taken as guilt. "It's improper for a woman to disclose her close relationship with a married man or cause disharmony to someone's family," she said. Kaisri said all universities have rules barring students from doing anything that could damage their reputation. "I urge university executives to consider that if a student's behaviour damages the reputation of their university, then it's the duty of the university to be responsible and teach its students to behave properly," she said. Pemmika recently attracted media attention when she accused Prakitpao's family of having him incarcerated in Srithanya mental hospital, despite being "perfectly sane". On Monday, a court ruled there was nothing untoward in Prakitpao being admitted to hospital because the 37-year-old was suffering from a mental disorder. Chulalongkorn's Faculty of Psychology dean Dr Sompoch Iamsupasit said the university would wait for the court's verdict before deciding whether it would take action against Pemmika. "We won't do anything because of public pressure," he said. The Central Juvenile and Family Court accepted the lawsuit filed by Prakitpao's wife and summoned the parties to appear on May 22. Sompoch said Pemmika had tried to call him asking for advice but he had not yet talked to her. He said Pemmika wouldn't be able to graduate this year as she was absent from three out of six examinations. He said according to Pemmika's record that she had absented from examination several times before because of a congenital disease. He said Pemmika was been a student with a "good school-record". Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police, meanwhile, are investigating the high levels of ephedrine in Prakitpao as requested by his family, and will call Pemmika for questioning today.
