Plea to scrutinise Aust aquaculture

The Thai Marine Shrimp Farmers' Association has called on the Fishery Department to implement Import Risk Analysis (IRA) on aquaculture products imported from Australia to prevent GAV and MoV viruses from spreading in the Kingdom.

The association fears that the viruses will spread to shrimp farms in the Kingdom, affecting exports of an average of Bt80 billion in foreign exchange per year and more than a million jobs.

Suraphol Pratuangtum, president of the association, said an open letter had been handed to the department, calling for the retaliatory measure against Australian foods after Biosecurity Australia said it would put Thai shrimp through IRA.

The Australian agency said it suspected Thai shrimp of having five viruses. No scientific inspection has shown whether Thai shrimp has the viruses.
