Vijit suddenly resigns from FAT

Vijit Getkaew surprised soccer circles with his decision.
Vijit Getkaew stepped down yesterday after 12 years as head of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT).

The shock resignation of Vijit comes just 10 days ahead of the Association's general assembly.

Vijit succeeded Gen Chalor Kerdthes to become the FAT's 10th president back in 1995.

But his departure is shrouded in mystery as he gave no reasons in his resignation letter.

Reporters tried to contact Vijit but he turned off his mobile and failed to show up at the Association's office yesterday.

FAT's secretary-general Worawi Makudi said Vijit resigned because of personal reasons.

"He also wanted changes within the FAT, especially in the working structure that will benefit Thai soccer in the future," he said.

Despite Worawi's brave assertions, it was rumoured that Vijit's departure was a result of conflicts among executive members which he failed to control.

Vijit will remain as caretaker president, while an election and the general assembly are held on March 18 - at the National Football Training Centre in Nong Chok.

It is likely that Worawi will step into Vijit's shoes, while BEC Tero Sasana's team manager Ong-art Korsinkha is expected to become the secretary-general.
