EC to hold referendum

The Constitution Drafting Committee ruled yesterday that the public referendum on the new constitution would be carried out by the Election Commission (EC), the committee's spokesman said.

Wuthichai Kallayanamit said that constitution drafter Pairot Promsat, who had proposed that the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) conduct the voting using only Bt500 million, accepted the ruling.

However, some charter drafters reserved the right to change the ruling at the NLA as they believe the Bt1.6 billion budget was too high and should be cut to Bt1.2 billion.

Some drafters also opposed the clause stipulating that the EC can set a new voting date for the referendum in case of an emergency.
