Bomb attacks welcome Gen Sonthi's visit to Narathiwat

Suspected militants staged simultaneous bomb attacks in Narathiwat on Friday as Army Commander Gen Sonthi Bunyaratglin is in the area to be briefed about the security situation.

Police were alert at about 9.15am about the attacks.

Initial investigation found that the militants planted explosives at a foot of a bridge of Ar Nae village in Rangae district.

The bomb went off, injuring a border patrol police.

The second attack injured a police sergeant as the militants hung the explosive on a tree and ignited the bomb as the police sergeant walked by.

The third explosion went off at Toh E Tae village in the same district but wounded no one.

Police said the militants trapped the security officers by killing a man and waited for the authorities to go to the area to investigate before igniting the explosives.

The attacks were just about four kilometres where Gen Sonthi, also chairman of the military junta, was being briefed of the daily violence in the deep south provinces.
