AEC to rule on graft cases today

The Assets Examination Committee will today rule on cases of alleged graft involving the deposed administration of Thaksin Shinawatra, AEC chairman Nam Yimyaem said yesterday.
The scandals include the Krung Thai Bank loan, the purchase of fire vehicles by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the two- and three-digit lottery, he said.If the AEC rules that there was corruption in any of the cases, it will establish an ad hoc panel to investigate them [before passing on the evidence to the Attorney-General], he said. The AEC will also consider other cases involving the rubber scam and the telecom excise tax, he added. Meanwhile, Democrat Party spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon urged Austrian company Steyr Daimler Puch to reveal to whom it had paid kickbacks in the purchase of the controversial fire-fighting vehicles at a cost of Bt6.7 billion. The public should know who was involved in the scandal, and particularly, which politicians received benefits from the deal, he said.
