The family of "tutorial king" Dr Prakitpao Thomthitchong has urged Crime Suppression Police to find out why high levels of ephedrine were detected in his blood and who was the source of supply.
His mother Ploenjit, older brother Prakitpan and wife Alisa filed a complaint with the police yesterday, saying continuous consumption of ephedrine was believed to be the cause of Prakitpao's mental illness. The family's complaint followed the diagnosis of a doctor at Srithanya Hospital that Prakitpao's mental problems were caused by ephedrine, which was found to be 200 times higher than the accepted level in his body. High doses of ephedrine, a common ingredient in medicines, can affect the mind. Ploenjit told the police that Prakitpao had developed some "strange behaviour" ever since a group of friends led by Pemmika Veerachatraksit - who claims to be a "close female friend" of Prakitpao - persuaded him to practice meditation last September. "We suspect he might have been given the ephedrine around that time," Ploenjit said. "Whenever his body needed ephedrine, he always fidgeted and wanted to go and do meditation with the group." She also noted that Prakitpao had avoided meeting family mem?bers since February 14, although he still contacted his brother, Prakitpan, by telephone. "But every time they talk-ed, he was always panting and kept repeating himself. We were concerned his life might be at risk, so we tried to find a way to take him to hospital as soon as possible," she said. Prakitpao, who owns a chain of tutorial schools for physics, was taken to Srithanya Hospital on February 19. However, Pemmika then called for Prakitpao's release, claiming he was mentally fit. The Criminal Court last Friday ordered Prakitpao to be transferred to Galaya Rajanagarindra Institute for a comprehensive check-up. "We believe that somebody with malicious intentions set up the plan to damage our family with the aim of getting hold of our assets. We want to ask the police to find out who is behind all this," Ploenjit said. Crime Suppression Commander Maj Gen Vorasak Noppasittiporn has vowed to urgently investigate the case.
