STREET WISE
Gingering up 'Old Ginger'

Many names have surfaced as candidates for the position of finance minister, and at time of going to press on Saturday it was uncertain who would win the accolade from Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont.

Many said Kosit Panpiemras, currently deputy prime minister and industry minister, was the most suitable choice, given his lengthy experience in the banking business and extensive knowledge of macro-economics. Still, if he does take over, it could tarnish his reputation when he eventually returns to Bangkok Bank. Surely, many may say, he had ample time to issue a regulation advantageous to the banking sector in general and to Bangkok Bank in particular.

What about Virabongsa Ramangkura? As a macroeconomics guru, he sounds like a good choice too. And none could overlook MR Chatu Mongol Sonakul, the former central banker, who was notorious for his sharp tongue and fearless attitude. Will not Chatu Mongol take pity on the country and step out of the green shade of his restaurant, the Orangery, to fight for good macroeconomic policies?

All of them happen to be the right age to join the "Old Ginger" Cabinet.

The ginger in question has been losing its savour of late and could benefit from the pungency of ripe experience.

Where then should Surayud turn?

How about Suthee Singhasaneh? He pulled no punches in his day as finance minister and deputy prime minister in several governments. In his 70s, he is the right age; but Surayud may have a problem enticing him into the limelight, for Suthee has avoided social functions for a long time.

Then there's Panas Simasathien, finance minister in the Anand administration, where he shaped major policies in tough times. Ironically, that government was also installed by the military in the wake of a coup. Yes, perhaps Panas would have just the necessary experience to share with the "Old Ginger" Cabinet.

He too is a spicy septuage-narian.
