Pongsaklek to clash with Ebisuoka

[BOXING] World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight champion Pongsaklek Krating-daeng Gym will protect his unbeaten record against Japanese boxers when he takes on Junichi Ebisuoka for his 17th title defence on April 6 in Saraburi.
Having reigned over the division for almost seven years since dethroning Malcolm Tunacao of Mexico with a splendid first-round TKO in March 2001, the southpaw, who holds a 64-2 record with 33 knockouts, seems to relish challenges from the Japanese. In his previous seven meetings with Japanese fighters, Pongsaklek has conjured up four knockout victories including the fastest knockout record in the flyweight category when he floored Daisuke Naito in just 34 seconds of the first round five years ago. However, Piyarat Vajiratanawongse, the Thai champion's manager, warned that Pongsaklek, whose only two losses have come at the hands of Filipino journeyman Jerry Pahayahay during the early stages of his glittering career, cannot take Ebisuoka (14-9-3) for granted. "He [Ebisuoka] moved up a division from the light flyweight class. From his record, he certainly is not an easy opponent," said Piyarat. "In the past, he used to win his fights against Pichitnoi Sitbang-prachan which forced the Thai to retire prematurely. But I believe in Pongsaklek who is well prepared for the bout, plus the fight is on home soil and that's a huge advantage," Piyarat said. He said he had already scheduled Pongsaklek's next fight should the 29-year-old avoid an upset and beat Ebisuoka. "We have already signed a contract quite in advance with Daisuke Naito, the old foe. The bout might take place in Tokyo in June," Piyarat said. "I'm preparing Pongsaklek's 19th title defence with another Japanese boxer ... Pongsaklek's historic 20th fight, which will break Khaosai Galaxy's record of title defences, will be held on December 5 at Sanam Luang."
