Villagers up in arms over Trang estate

A group opposing a plan to set up an industrial estate in Tong Kai in the southern province of Trang yesterday protested a lack of public participation in the process to select the site.
Veerachat Thinna, a representative from the villagers in the area, said the local provincial council planned to set up an industrial estate in Tong Kai, covering an area of 1,648 rai. The possible environmental impact from the project is now being studied. He said the project lacked public participation in the decision-making process. Despite a plan to set up an industrial estate in the province, local people disagree on the area chosen for the site. Veerachat said that on February 23, a council of local residents had decided unanimously to oppose the project, because they feared possible environmental impacts. They vowed to fight to the end against the establishment of the estate. Pradit Tuandom, a community leader, said he would act on behalf of the villagers in writing to oppose the project to the governor of Trang and former PM Chuan Leekpai, a native of the province.
