Wijit: Onet exams went off smoothly

This weekend saw Grade-12 graduates sitting the Ordinary National Educational Test, or Onet.
According to Education Minister Wijit Srisa-an, the examinations went smoothly. Students sat the tests on Saturday and yesterday. Results will be announced on April 10 on the website of the exam administrator, the National Institute for Educational Testing Services (NIETS). The results are important for securing entry into preferred universities. "The tests ran normally as expected," Wijit said yesterday during an inspection of an exam venue in Ayutthaya. Last year's tests ended in a nightmare for some students when they failed to locate exam venues owing to confusing information from NIETS. "Last year was an accident," Wijit said. He and NIETS director Utumporn Jamornmann were not responsible for last year's exams. In addition, publication of results was delayed several times leading to the disruption of university admission schedules. NIETS was trying out a new marking method. Wijit said yesterday NIETS returned to a decades-old method and the mistakes of last year would not be repeated. "We have instructed officials to stop and check the marking procedure every 100 exam papers to see if the system is working as intended," he added. Utumporn said all papers would be returned from exam venues to NIETS by March 3.
