Election date uncertain, says PM

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has cast doubt over whether general elections will go ahead in October as promised by the military junta, the Malaysian state media reported yesterday.
Surayud also said he would retire from politics once his administration had organised elections. "I am not going to get involved in politics," he said. The premier said the interim government was proceeding with its timetable but could not confirm an October election would be held. "I cannot say at the moment," Surayud told Bernama news agency, when asked about the deadline. "It still depends a lot on the drafting committee, like when it is able to provide the first draft for a referendum, on when we can set a timeframe for the referendum. After the referendum, we will proceed with the general elections," Surayud said, adding he was 'confident' elections would be held. He stressed that the proposed changes to foreign ownership rules were not yet finalised and the government was open to suggestions from investors.
