Hot summer set for North

"This year's summer in northern Thailand will be hotter than previous years with lower rainfall as a result of the El Nino phenomenon. Temperatures in the region will be higher than 40 degrees Celsius on some days during April and May," Santanee Chaichiangpin, an official from the Chiang Mai Meteorological Centre, said at the weekly press conference in Chiang Mai.
This year's summer started in mid-February in the North. "Due to this phenomenon, the city will also have haze during the daytime," he said. The hottest part of summer, with temperatures higher than 40, will start in mid-March and run to the end of April, when rain and summer storms may occur and reduce the heat. Hailstorms are likely during March and April."The hot, dry conditions could easily result in unexpected fires, so people should be careful," the official warned. "This year's rainfall will be insufficient for consumption and agriculture, so farmers should stock up on water. However, the drought will not be too severe as rainfall last year exceeded the average and provided a supply of water to cope with this year's drought," Santanee said.
